Trinity College Cambridge has appointed the conductor, Stephen Layton, as Director of Music and Fellow of the college from October 2006.

Today's announcement comes as Layton is about to make his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

In Europe, Layton has served as Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Kammerkoor, and now renews his position as Chief Guest Conductor of the Danish Radio Choir from April 2006. In this country, Layton will further his commitment to the Holst Singers and Polyphony in new projects involving The Academy of Ancient Music and the Britten Sinfonia. Joining this portfolio will be the choir of Trinity College Cambridge who will record with Layton, adding to his discography on Hyperion which includes the 2001 Gramophone Choral Disc of the Year and the Diapason D’Or 2002.

In the time that Layton has been Director of Music of the Temple Church, the legal profession has given extraordinary and visionary support. Layton and his colleague, James Vivian, in a unique partnership, have returned the Temple Church Choir to the forefront of London choirs today.  Layton premiered Tavener's epic all-night vigil, The Veil of the Temple, in London and New York, producing associated recordings on Universal and Sony-BMG. Commissioned for the Temple church and its choir, joining with vast forces, The Veil is an enduring legacy for the British choral tradition.

The Master of Trinity College said, “Stephen Layton is a dynamic and distinguished figure on the musical scene, nationally and internationally. We are delighted he is coming to Trinity.”
